Ingredients:
- 2 cups (250g) all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup (150g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar, packed
- 1/4 tsp (1.5g) salt
- 6 cups (900g) peeled and diced apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp (16g) cornstarch
- 1 tbsp (6g) ground cinnamon
- 1 tbsp (15ml) lemon juice
- 1/4 tsp (1.5g) salt
- 2 tbsp (30g) melted butter
- 1/2 cup (60g) powdered sugar
Instructions:
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9x13 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, and salt. Use a pastry cutter or fork to cut in the cold cubed butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Firmly press the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan, ensuring it reaches all four corners.
- Bake the crust for 12-15 minutes until the edges are barely golden. Remove and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, toss the diced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, cinnamon, cornstarch, and salt.
- Optional: Sauté the apple mixture in a pan over medium heat for 5 minutes for a softer filling.
- Spread the apple mixture evenly over the pre-baked crust, smoothing the top with a spatula.
- Return the pan to the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes until the edges are bubbling.
- Brush the top with melted butter and dust with powdered sugar before slicing into 16 bars.
